Televising Poker

People who do not play poker cannot understand why so many games are televised. There are periods of time when every other channel seems to be carrying the coverage of some poker tournament.

The first thing people have to understand is that if they were to consult with a tilt.org poker fan, the person would inevitably state that not enough poker games are televised. The only time people complain about what it on TV is when it is something that they do not lie. The other thing the poker player will say is that watching the events is very educational.

Poker is not an easy game to learn. Not only does the person who is playing have to learn what all the different hands mean, they also have to know the rules for the type of poker game they are playing. After learning all of this, the person needs to learn how to read their opponents.

When a player gets really good they start to learn that there are certain strategic moves that they can make which will help them learn a game. All of this stuff is usually something the person has to learn on their own. Another option is to take a course at a poker school but this can become expensive. Having the events televised means the person can observe how their favorite professionals play. They can watch and see what types of strategies the pros use, and what things seem to work and which do not.

In addition to covering things like the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, some channels have also fallen into the habit of airing shows that focus entirely on poker. These shows are usually late at night because they are not big ratings cows, but they are steadily growing in popularity.

Most of the shows follow a similar format. They get a bunch of professional poker players together to play in a tournament. Most of the shows than break down the moves that the player makes, what they could have done differently, and why the move either worked or didn’t. Another great thing about this type of programing is that it gives the person watching it is an opportunity to DVR the broadcast so they can watch it over and over again and really understands how the game works.

Very few people can drop everything and fly to Vegas just so they can see the World Series of Poker. Because the event is televised they can have the next best thing. The production crew has gotten so good that they are now able to put together broadcasts that give the viewers the sense that they are really there.

Even though the non-poker fans might complain about how much television time is devoted to poker, some of them are being converted. There are more poker players in the world today than there have ever been before and most experts think a big reason for the surge in popularity is because of the televising of events.
